Your sinuses consist of eight hollow spaces in the bones of the forehead, cheeks and temples. Healthy, open sinuses are lined with sticky mucus to ensure that air going into the lungs is moist, warm and free from dust, dirt, and pollutants. Without these filters, lungs, kidneys and blood can become permeated with toxins. Over three million people a year are affected with sinusitis or sinus infection. If your cold lasts more than 10 day it is likely you have sinusitis. Trigger-point therapy is a form of chiropractic sinus adjustment. Using this technique, your chiropractor will apply pressure to a specific trigger point, other than the sinus region, in your body to relieve pain. Let’s find out more about sinusitis and how chiropractic care can help.

Causes of Sinusitis

In sinusitis or sinus infection, the linings are inflamed. The tissues become full of mucus and drainage is blocked. Increased pressure causes pain, swelling around the eyes, clogged nasal passages, chills, fever, dizziness and loss of appetite. Some people are more prone to this condition in the fall and spring, especially with pollen, mildew, and mold allergies. Typically a sinus infection starts with a cold and then a virus or bacteria infects the sinuses. If you have been sick less than 10 days and are not getting worse you likely have a viral infection. If you have not improved within 10 days and now feel worse it is likely bacterial infection.

Chronic Sinusitis

Chronic sinusitis is a common condition in which the cavities around nasal passages become inflamed and swollen for at least 12 weeks, despite treatment attempts. Also known as chronic rhinosinusitis, this condition interferes with drainage and causes mucus buildup. Salt water irrigation is often used to treat this condition. In some cases surgery is performed but it is important to take a conservative approach first.

The Chiropractor and Preventative Medicine

Building a routine of healthcare around maintaining wellness versus treating illness is an important part of a wellness lifestyle. Chiropractic treatment focuses treating subluxations in order to maintain an optimally functioning nervous system. Misalignment of one or more spinal vertebrae that creates stress or irritation on nearby nerves, can hinder the function of the nervous system.

Boosting Immunity

The results of many studies have established a critical role for the autonomic nervous system in mediating interactions between the nervous and immune systems, two important adaptive systems that were originally considered to function independently of each other. We know the nervous system and the immune system are connected through the adrenal glands and mounting evidence is revealing that these two systems are linked in other ways. The national Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases states there is evidence that the brain may send messages directly down nerve cells to the immune system. This link supports the theory of chiropractic. removal of subluxations through the chiropractic adjustment allows the body to function optimally.
