TBS is a condition in which the spine is injured during or shortly after the delivery process resulting in nerve system damage or interference. In clinical Chiropractic terminology, TBS includes any birth injury causing the Vertebral Subluxation Complex or spinal injuries. It is typically found in the infant’s neck and occasionally in the mid and lower back.

Occurrences of this disorder are found when:

  • The head, neck, or any other part of the spine and pelvis of the infant have been pulled and twisted during the birth process
  • The birth process is prolonged
  • The delivery process is difficult
  • Extraction aids are used during delivery (i.e. forceps, vacuum, etc.)
  • The child is delivered by Caesarian section

United States Birth Injuries

The 10 most common birth injuries include: Brachial Plexus Palsy (injury to the nerves in baby’s arms), bone fractures, cephalohematoma,(hemorrhage of blood between the skull and outer membrane of the bone) caput succedaneum,( swelling of the scalp), perinatal asphyxia, (deprivation of oxygen to a newborn infant)t intracranial hemorrhage, subconjunctival hemorrhage, facial paralysis; spinal cord injuries; and cerebral palsy.

The only way to determine if TBS has occurred is through a chiropractic evaluation.  About two percent of births in the United States result in Physical injury to the infant.  Labor and deliver isn’t just difficult for the mother, the infant also experiences the physical stress and strain of the birth process.

Clavicle Fracture: Most Common Injury

Clavicle, also known as collarbone, fractures are the most common injury sustained by newborns during birth. A clavicle fracture is a break in the collar bone and occurs as a result of a difficult delivery or trauma at birth. Clavicle fracture occurs in one out of 11 births.  These injuries can result in temporary or permanent immobility of the arm.

Spinal Subluxation

The term “subluxation” is used by doctors of chiropractic to depict the altered position of the vertebra and subsequent functional loss. Subluxation was first added to the chiropractic vocabulary in 1907 by D.D. Palmer, a man who is considered to be the father of chiropractic in the United States. Chiropractors view subluxation as a process rather than a static condition during which the tissues undergo constant changes.  Spinal subluxation occurs when one or more spinal vertebrae move out of position, creating stress or irritation on nearby nerves.  One of the three most common causes of subluxation is trauma.  Minor or major trauma can occur to an infant as he or she makes the way through the narrow birth canal.  If the medical staff must use tools to assist the baby’s exit this increases the trauma. Chiropractic adjustments remove the subluxation, allowing the body to function favorably.

How do Birth Injuries Occur

If pushing by the mother is proving ineffective doctors and medical staff with use tools to help deliver the baby. Forceps to reposition the  baby’s head or to pull the baby out is one method or often vacuum suction is used.  Sometimes doctors will also pull on the baby’s limbs or head.  Any of these techniques can result in TBS Traumatic Birth Syndrome.

Have Your Baby Checked

A baby’s spine lengthens by 50% by the time they reach one year old!  At no other time does this growth happen so rapidly, so you want to make sure your baby is in proper alignment ensuring proper symmetrical growth. Adverse events linked to pediatric chiropractic care are virtually non-existent, estimated at 1 in 250 million pediatric visits.  There is not a single medical procedure safer.  Many chiropractors have pediatric certifications and specialize in infant adjustments.  Research has shown a correlation between chiropractic care and a reduction in the symptoms of colic, ear infection, ADHD and more.
