People with fibromyalgia (fI-bro-my-AL-gee-ah) syndrome, or FMS, live with constant pain in their muscles and soft tissues. The word fibromyalgia comes from the Greek myos meaning “muscle”, Greek algos meaning “pain”, and New Latin fibro meaning “fibrous tissue. It is a disorder that causes widespread musculoskeletal pain in the joint, muscles, tendons . It is often combined with other symptoms like temporomandibular Joint disorders (TMJ/TMD), irritable bowel syndrome, fatigue, depression, anxiety, cognitive issues and sleep interruption. Because the pain is spread throughout the body and because a variety of other symptoms can accompany the disease, fibromyalgia syndrome is often difficult to diagnose. Current guidelines state that a diagnosis can be made if a person has widespread pain for more than three months, with no underlying medical condition.
There are several theories about the causes of fibromyalgia from hormonal disturbances to stress to genetics. While there is no clear consensus about what causes fibromyalgia most researchers believe fibromyalgia results not from a single event but from a combination of many physical and emotional stressors and genetics.
Chiropractic Connection
How Chiropractic can help if you think you have fibromyalgia and how you may be able to get rid of your chronic fatigue, (and severe aches and pain) even if you’ve tried everything before! Imagine living pain free, without aches, pains or even feeling tired! Now you may be able to and stop the suffering….finally getting the most out of life…without medication or any weird remedies! As chiropractors, one of the focuses is overall health and well being is stress. Subluxations, misalignment of the vertebrae in the spine, can be caused by the three T’s toxins, trauma and thoughts ( stress). Theses subluxations hinder the optimal function of the nervous system which consists of the brain, spinal cord, sensory organs and a network of nerve cells and fibers tht transmit signals from different parts of the body. When subluxations stop this communication between the brain and the body, health issues can arise. Chiropractors use gentle adjustments to the spine to remove these subluxations.
Chiropractic Care Improves Cervical and Lumbar Ranges of Motion For Sufferers of Fibromyalgia
A study by Blunt, Rajwani and Guerriero patients consisted of a utilizing “chiropractic spinal manipulation, soft tissue therapy and passive stretching” and the results indicated that “chiropractic management improved patients’ cervical and lumbar ranges of motion .. and reported pain levels”. A study by Hains combining spinal manipulation and ischemic compression found results of “statistically significant lessening of pain intensity and corresponding improvement in quality of sleep and fatigue levels.” Hains and Hains conclude that the “study suggests a potential role for chiropractic care in the management of fibromyalgia”.
Chiropractic Care and Resistance Training Can Work Together
In patients with fibromyalgia, resistance training improves strength and functionality. The addition of chiropractic treatment saw improvement in symptoms, flexibility, balance, coordination and endurance. Patients need to combine resistance training and chiropractic treatment two times per week according to the Florida State University study.
