Chiropractic adjustments are a safe, non-pharmaceutical alternative to treating the symptoms of PMS. Chiropractors perform adjustments in the lumbar spine and the sacrum, specifically L2 and L3. In multiple studies, women report less bloating, headaches, cravings and cramping while under chiropractic care. Today more women are seeking out natural and alternative methods to treat symptoms for PMS and Menopause.

Explanation of PMS

PMS stands for premenstrual syndrome – it’s the combination of symptoms that some women suffer from a week or so before their period. Symptoms appear before your period starts (as many as five days) and will disappear during your period. Symptoms can affect your body AND your brain, and their intensity can vary a lot from woman to woman. There are 150 identified symptoms of PMS.

Common symptoms include: bloating, irritability, headaches, migraines, breast tenderness, fatigue, stress, cramping, back pain, nausea and weight gain.

Chiropractic for PMS Symptom Relief

Research from the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics (May 1999) indicates that women with PMS symptoms experience significantly more muscle tenderness in the low back, muscle weakness, and positive orthopedic finding of the low back. The report concludes that a relatively high incidence of spinal dysfunction exists in PMS sufferers compared with a comparable group of Non-PMS Sufferers. This is suggestive that spinal dysfunction could be a causative factor in PMS and that chiropractic manipulative therapy may offer an alternative therapeutic approach for PMS Suffers. Patients and chiropractors often report a decline in PMS symptoms including back pain, bloating, cramping, and loss of energy.

Reaching Menopause

On average women begin to experience the symptoms of menopause at age 51. Menopause is a normal condition that all women experience as they age. The term menopause can describe any of the changes a woman goes through either just before or after she stops menstruating, marking the end of her reproductive period. The most common symptoms of perimenopause and menopause reported are hot flashes, night sweats and sleep issues, which can be attributed to a charge in levels of estrogen and progesterone.

Hormone Replacement Therapy

When a woman begins having menopause symptoms like hot flashes, irregular periods or mood changes, she will probably wonder at some point whether she should take some type of menopause hormone therapy (MHT). Sometimes called “hormone replacement therapy,” or HRT, it usually refers to a combination of the female hormones estrogen and/or progesterone. Be cautious of hormone replacement therapy, research had shown that this once common menopause treatment carries significant risks and can increase your risk of breast cancer, heart disease, and stroke.

Treating Menopausal Symptoms with Chiropractic

Like PMS, Chiropractic can provide a drug-free alternative to treating symptoms of menopause. Every function of the body is controlled by the central nervous system. Chiropractors align the spine to remove pressure and interference from the central nervous system, allowing it to express itself freely and function optimally, thereby normalizing the function of the body. Some women have experienced a decrease in menopausal symptoms with regular chiropractic visits.

Our doctors will provide top-notch chiropractic care regardless of where your pain started. We are devoted to improving our patients’ health and putting your body and nervous system in optimum health.
