Anatomy of the Human Spine

The spine is made of 33 individual bones stacked one on top of the other. This spinal column provides the main support for your body, allowing you to stand upright, bend, and twist, while protecting the spinal cord from injury. Strong muscles and bones, flexible tendons and ligaments, and sensitive nerves contribute to a healthy spine. Yet, any of these structures affected by strain, injury, or disease can cause pain. Our spine is strong enough to protect the sensitive nerve roots, while at the same time it allows us the flexibility to accomplish all the movements of daily life. There are shock absorbers between the vertebrae they are spongy pads of cartilage. Each disc along the vertebrae forms what is called the spinal motion unit.

Back Pain

A spinal motion unit that moves improperly or is overly strained can irritate nerves, interfere with muscle tension and result in pain. The nerve interference is called subluxation. Parts of the body may not function properly because of subluxation. A spinal disc herniation can be caused by trauma, lifting injuries or other unknown causes. Disc herniation is sometimes call slipped or bulging disc. Early diagnosis of back pain is important to avoid permanent damage.
